A mesh system uses multiple connected units placed around the home. It can provide more consistent Wi-Fi in larger homes, multi-level homes, basements, garages, and rooms far from the main router.
A range extender sits in between. It rebroadcasts an existing signal to fill one specific gap, usually with a separate network name unless the system supports seamless handoff.
The practical difference isn’t top speed. It’s whether the far corners of your house get a usable signal at all.
Does my smart home actually need mesh Wi-Fi?
If any of the following happens regularly, coverage is your problem, not your plan:
- Your video doorbell takes several seconds to load, or shows a spinning icon before the feed appears.
- An outdoor camera or garage device drops offline and reconnects on its own.
- Smart plugs, locks, or sensors in the basement show as unavailable even though the rest of the house is fine.
- Speeds feel strong in the room with the router and noticeably worse two rooms away.
If your devices are clustered on one floor near the router and everything responds quickly, you probably don’t need to add hardware. Coverage problems tend to show up in the same rooms with the same devices, not randomly.
Why do smart home devices struggle before phones and laptops do?
Smart-home devices often show Wi-Fi problems before phones and laptops do. A video doorbell may load slowly, a camera may disconnect, or a smart lock may take longer to respond, even when other devices in the house seem fine.
This is often because small smart devices sit near exterior walls, doors, garages, or other spots farther from the router. Cameras and doorbells also send video out continuously, so a weak connection tends to show up as delay, dropped clips, or missed notifications rather than a slow web page.
Do you need more speed or better coverage?
These are two different problems, and it’s worth figuring out which one you have before buying anything.
If your internet feels slow everywhere in the home, especially when several people are online at once, you likely need more speed. If the internet works well near the router but struggles in certain rooms, floors, or outdoor areas, the issue is more likely Wi-Fi coverage.

- Better router placement, an extender, or mesh Wi-Fi tends to help specific weak spots in the home.

Is buying your own mesh system worth it?
Sometimes, but less often than people assume. If Wi-Fi equipment is already included in your plan, adding a second system means another app, another set of updates, and more setup steps layered on top of what you already have. In some cases, it can also make it harder for smart devices and their apps to communicate correctly.
Buying your own system makes the most sense when you have an unusual layout, a detached structure well away from the house, or a specific feature your included equipment doesn’t offer. In those cases, call Technical Support first so it can be set up in a way that keeps things simple.
How do you improve coverage without buying anything?
Try these before adding any hardware. They’re free, and they solve more problems than people expect.
- Place the router in an open, central area, off the floor and out of cabinets.
- Keep it away from large appliances and metal objects.
- Connect stationary devices like a desktop or game console directly to the router when practical.
- Move important smart devices closer to the router when possible.
- Note whether the same rooms consistently have weak service.

Where to start
Coverage and capacity are two different problems. If Wi-Fi is weak in certain parts of your home, router placement or an extender may help. If your household needs more capacity for lots of devices and simultaneous activity, a higher-speed plan may make sense.
