How much upload speed does a security camera need?
It depends on resolution and whether the camera records continuously or only on events. Manufacturers publish their own figures, and they are the most reliable place to start.

Ring also publishes a plain rating for upload speed with its devices: above 10 Mbps is good, 5 to 10 Mbps is okay, and below 5 Mbps is poor. That is for the cameras alone, before anyone in the house does anything else.
Why does upload speed matter more than download speed for cameras?
Download is data coming to you. Upload is data leaving your house. A camera’s entire job is to send video out to a cloud service so you can view it and so recordings are stored somewhere other than the camera itself. That is upload, all day.
Most internet connections are built the other way around. They deliver a large download number and a much smaller upload number, because historically households consumed far more than they sent. Smart home cameras broke that assumption.
Symmetrical internet means your upload speed matches your download speed. How many cameras can your internet actually support?
Add up the peaks, not the averages, because cameras tend to trigger together. A delivery at the front door often puts the doorbell, the porch camera, and the driveway camera into recording at the same moment.
Take a six-device setup: a 4K doorbell and five 2K cameras. Using the published figures above, that is about 15 Mbps for the doorbell plus roughly 3.3 Mbps for each camera, or about 32 Mbps of simultaneous upload. On a symmetrical 1-Gig plan, that is roughly 3 percent of your upload capacity, leaving the rest for video calls, cloud backups, and everything else.

Why does my video doorbell take so long to load?
The live view is an upload. When you tap to see who is at the door, the doorbell has to push video out before you can see anything, so the delay you experience is almost always an upload bottleneck rather than a slow app.
Three things cause it, in this order of likelihood.
- Not enough upload headroom. If something else in the house is uploading at the same time, the doorbell waits its turn.
- Weak Wi-Fi at the door. Front doors sit at the edge of most networks, behind exterior walls and often around a corner from the router.
- Video quality set higher than the connection supports. Cameras will lower resolution automatically, but they buffer while doing it.

Do security cameras use a lot of data each month?
With continuous recording, yes. Google publishes typical monthly data usage of 200 to 300 GB per camera for a Nest Cam recording around the clock, and up to 400 GB for a Nest Cam IQ on its high setting. Four cameras at that rate exceeds a terabyte of data every month from your security system alone.
Event-based recording changes the picture dramatically. The same Nest Cam that uses 200 GB with 24/7 recording can drop to roughly 10 GB on event-based recording at the High setting. If you do not need continuous history, switching modes is the single biggest lever you have.
